Woman in a vibrant green coat posing with floral paintings.

Gabriela Hogg is a Toronto-based artist whose work explores the emotional architecture of everyday life through colour-driven abstraction. Working primarily in acrylic, marker, and oil pastel, her compositions balance gestural intensity with areas of restraint, using contrast, and colour to create rhythm & atmosphere.

Background

Gabriela’s practice is shaped by her work within the art consulting and design industries, where she collaborates closely with architects and interior designers to curate and integrate artwork into built environments. This dual perspective; both as a creator and a consultant; has developed a strong sensitivity to spatial dialogue, materiality, and the emotional impact of visual composition. Her experience working directly with collectors and design professionals informs a practice that is both conceptually grounded and highly attuned to context, placement, and narrative.

Style

Her paintings are gestural, layered, and spatially intuitive, balancing areas of density with intentional openness. Rather than resolving into fixed imagery, the compositions hover between abstraction and suggestion; evoking landscape, movement, and fleeting forms without fully defining them. Color operates emotionally rather than descriptively: saturated greens, yellows, and blues collide with softer washes and exposed ground, creating tension between control and release. Drips, interruptions, and abrupt shifts in mark-making are not corrected but preserved, allowing the work to retain its immediacy and sense of motion.

Process

Working in an additive and subtractive rhythm, Gabriela builds her paintings through accumulation, disruption, and selective restraint. Layers are applied quickly and instinctively; brushed, dragged, diluted, or poured. Then partially obscured or left exposed to create depth and visual memory. The process resists over-resolution; decisions are made around when to stop rather than when to complete. Each painting becomes a record of movement and response, where composition is discovered rather than pre-planned, and where the final image holds both intention and accident in equal weight.

”I am a firm believer in the power of experimentation and play in the artistic process. I often incorporate unconventional materials and techniques into my work, which allows me to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of my craft. I don’t like to have a plan, or pre-sketches like I was trained and taught by my professors and mentors, I always hated any kinds of rules in any area of life. Why must expression have boundaries? I do what I want. I just express in brushstrokes and in colour. I choose my colour pallette, and let it fly.”
